BARUCH COLLEGE–On a Sunday in September, hidden on 69th Street and 37th Avenue, a congregation of dance troupes, dressed in vibrant colors and distinct attire, practiced their routines one last time. Loud music radiated from giant speakers fixed to the backs of cars. A sharp whistle pierced the air to guide dancers through their choreography.
The troupes represented various Latin American countries: Paraguay, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Argentina. Each country, presenting its culture, had gathered for the unifying purpose of marching in the Queens Hispanic Day Parade.
At noon, the parade marshal began the procession, aimed at sharing the message that Hispanic people in the United States should celebrate and take pride in their culture.
